The middle class is the worst of the lot when it comes to "thinking about money". You can never trust a person who belongs to this class, especially when it comes to money.
And the reason is that a poverty stricken individual has to give less importance to money, and more importance to genuine human ideals (helping people, honesty etc) if he wants to live a happy and contented life. Many religions insist that heaven would be full of poor people.
A person who is poor has no choice but to give money lesser importance. The same can be said about rich people, because of an excess of wealth which would automatically invalidate any importance that wealth has for such a person.
Money, inadvertently is therefore a problem only for the middle class. It is they who are part of the rat race, the rich and poor stand apart and don't belong to this rat race. Middle class would do anything to get ahead in this rat race.
